St. Philip the Evangelist is dedicated to growing members spiritually in Christian faith to glorify God; And to welcoming others to love and trust Christ in the same spiritual journey to fellowship with Him and serve God and one another.
Brief History: St. Philip the Evangelist
It is our goal to help you understand the story of St. Philip the Evangelist in Houston and your role as member in this church. In 2001, the Sudanese (now South Sudanese) Lost Boys resettled in Houston, Texas. Upon coming to the United States, they brought their faith with them and therefore started fellowship in their apartments in Braeswood. Their goal was to praise God and keep the traditional worship in their own languages as their faith thrives in the United States. Unsurprisingly, the fellowship grew and elders with a few families joined the fellowship. Later on, the leaders of this fellowship asked the management of Braeswood for space. God touched the hearts of Braeswood apartment management team, and they offered a unit within the complex. The Lost Boys had a few lay teachers among them and they started rehearsal songs in Dinka.
When the number increased, the fellowship needed a larger space and they kindly requested Christ Church Presbyterian for a facility to worship. The church gracefully provided the use of their chapel. The numbers grew again, and the chapel became too small. The congregation had to move to the Fellowship Hall. The fellowship started and the group became more diverse with Christians from many church backgrounds.
The church founded and named St. Philip the Evangelist. What is the church? You are the church, I am the church, and we are the church. It was with purpose to worship God in truth and experience spiritual impact as well as, to bring unity among the Sudanese community from different Christian backgrounds in authentic traditional worship.
